Screens:
Listed below is the various screens used in the system. You can
get any of these screens to be printed out by pressing a
Shift/PrtSc command (Print the screen). The lines on the screen
won't print properly but this doesn't diminish their value.
=====
The Display Screen:
Ln= is the line number.
Col= is the column number as set on the Ruler page (Alt-T).
Pg= is the page number.
S= is the spacing as set on the ruler page.
Unused= is the amount of unused temporary memory.
Insert is present when you are in the Insert mode. This label is
blank when Overwrite is selected. Use the Ins key to toggle it.
As a quick indicator, you can also determine if Insert is on by
looking at the shape of the cursor. If it is a block, then Insert
will also be on. If it is a line, then Insert is off.
The 2nd status line represents tabs and margins. A "-" is no
margin or tab, a "+" is a tab set and a "R" is the right margin.
The Left margin is always the leftmost position.
As you type text on the keyboards, you will see it appear on the
screen. Do not enter Carriage Returns at the end of a line unless
you intent it to be the end of a paragraph. If you do, you will
see a paragraph symbol on the screen where the return was
entered. If you do not enter a carriage return, the system will
perform an "Auto word wrap" when the next space character is
entered following the right margin. Also be aware that a carriage
return ends an indented left margin.
Text on the video screen is in temporary memory only. It will be
lost when you shut off the power. To save it for future use, you
must store the data on the diskette. To do this use the Alt-D
command and follow the menu that guides you.
=====
The Ruler Page (Alt-T):
The top line indicates the Column and the "Ruler Menu" message.
The 2nd line is the tabs/margins (same as the Display page)
9The next 5 lines instruct you how to set up the tabs and Right
Margin.
The right box allows you to set up page sizing factors. You must
first select a box item with the up/down arrows and then change
the value with the "+" and "-" keys. You should always set up the
"Pitch" first because it will automatically set up the Left
Margin and Right Margin to standard typing values. You may
over-ride the selected values if you wish. The Left margin does
not directly have any affect on the video screen except it sets
the left-most Column number. Its big effect is felt during
printing when it is sent to the printer as horizontal starting
position.
To cancel the Ruler Page without changing anything use the Alt-T
key. If you use the ESC key to exit the ruler mode, it will cause
a hidden string of characters to be placed in the text at or near
the top of the screen. This hidden string contains enough
information about the Ruler page to update it in the future if
you retrieve the page from the diskette. This embedded string
mixed in with text is necessary because it is the way that
WordPerfect handles the restoration of tabs and margins.
=====
The Help Screen:
This screen gives you help. It is broken down into four
categories. You select the category with the Left/Right arrow
keys.
The General category lists the various commands. Most of them are
Alt key combinations (That is you must first hold down the Alt
key and then momentarily press the indicated key). It is best to
first exit the Help Menu (ESC key) before entering the command
you desire but most of the Alt key combinations will cause an
automatic exit of the Help menu. Don't worry about the great
amount of items on this menu. You can generate many documents
using very few of the commands. The "Tabs,Margins,Spacing" item
is highlighted because it is a basic function that is used often.
The Cursor category lists the various ways of moving the cursor.
Most of these are obvious and you shouldn't have to consult with
this menu very often.
The Page Numbering category indicates which page numbering is
active. Usually, it is 0, that is no page numbers will be used.
If you wanted to place a page number at the top center of every
page, you desire a page scheme number of 2. You cannot set the
page number scheme in this menu because this menu is only
intended to help you. Instead, you need to exit the help menus
and perform an Alt-1 command (and then select the 2).
10The View Scratchpad category displays the data in the Scratchpad.
Usually it is blank unless you have been using the Scratchpad to
move blocks of text.
======
The Printer Menu;
This menu is displayed automatically when you attempt a Print
operation (Alt-P). The top box explains the print operation. The
bottom left box lets you set up various print options. The
LQ/Draft and Sheet Feeder Options may not work on all printers.
The right box indicates what printer is selected. To change this
value, you must exit print (using the ESC key) and then perform a
"Adjust" command, Alt-A. All of these values may be saved in the
Defaults file if you desire but this file should only be updated
if this document is the most common defaults you use.
If you print using Right Hand Justify (RHJ), the system will
attempt to adjust printed lines so they are right flush in
addition to left flush. Do not use this mode if you have columns
that need to aligned vertically. This includes sentences that
start with numbered lines because some lines will have spaces
added after the numbers.
The Envelope option is used to quickly print an envelope address.
To use it:
1. Make sure the pitch is correct. This affects where the
horizontal position of the address will appear. If you recently
printed out the document the pitch should already be correct.
2. Place the envelope in the printer.
3. Position the cursor to the start of the address text.
4. On the print menu, select E for the "Document or Envelope"
option.
The envelope will be printed when you press the "P" key. The
system prints until 2 consecutive carriage returns are
encountered. The horizontal spacing will be automatically
adjusted. If you printer doesn't allow you to conveniently insert
an envelope, print the address out on a normal piece of paper and
cut it out and paste it on to your envelope.
=====
The Adjust Menu:
This menu is used to adjust the volume and tone of the keyclick
and the error buzz. The cursor item allows you to adjust the
height of the cursor (Overwrite mode). This is handy when you are
working on a Laptop. The printer select item allows you to select
11which printer you have. The one you select will also be displayed
on the Printer menu. All of the items in the Adjust menu are
saved in the defaults file.
=====
The Disk Menu:
The menu is displayed automatically when you attempt a disk
operation. You select a command (Retrieve, Save, etc...) using
the up/down arrows. You select a drive by using the right/left
arrows. You proceed to the next level when you press the carriage
return. If you forgot the file name or want to see if the file
name already exists, use the Display Directory command.
When you enter the carriage return, you will usually be presented
with another screen that contains the "Directory" of the
diskette. The directory is an automatic table of contents that
the system keeps on each diskette. Each file you save is given a
name for reference. You select the name when you save a file.
The top box gives you status of the directory:
Date= is the present date you computer (DOS) has determined on
power up. If it isn't correct, you have to go back to DOS to fix
it but this isn't a critical item. It merely indicates that if
you were to save a file on disk, the file would be assigned this
"create date".
Time= is the same as Date except its the time of day.
Volume= is the volume date inserted when the diskette was
formatted. It may be left blank.
New Document Size= is the amount of text in memory. If you were
to attempt to save it on diskette, you would need this much room
on the diskette.
Free= is the amount of diskette that is unused and available.
Used= is the amount diskette space already used.
Files= is the number of files on the diskette.
The list of names below the top box is the individual files. One
of them will be highlighted. This is the "selected" file that
will be written to or read from next. You use the arrow keys to
select the file you desire. The disk name consists of 2 parts.
The first 8 characters is the name and the last 3 characters is a
extension (suffix). Usually the extension is DOC. This is the
standard Wordperfect extension. You chose the extension name when
you save the document. On the menu, the extension is proceeded by
a period. If you have a default file, you will also see it listed
12in the directory as the "DEFAULTS.DEF" file. Also, the main
EasyNow program will be listed as the EN.EXE file. You cannot
save either of these files. You probably noticed that all file
names are in Upper Case. The system converts Lower Case names to
Upper Case when you specify a file name. If you want to make a
backup copy of a file, save it under the same name except change
the suffix (extension) for DOC to BAK. Actually the new name
could be any extension you chose except .EXE which is a reserved
name.
Also you will usually find a file titled "DNAME.DOC". This file
contains the name of the Shareware distributor. You may us
Easynow to load this file, modify it and save it.
Following the File name is a number that represents the number of
text characters in the file (including hidden characters).
Following this is the date the file was last updated. This is
only applicable if the Time was set up correct when the file was
created.
Following this is the time the file was last updated. Similar to
the the date.
You may wish to obtain a quick printout of a particular
diskette's directory. If you notice at the bottom of the
Directory display, a Shift/PrtSc command will cause such a
printout to occur. It can then be saved with the diskette.
=====
Indents:
An indent is a temporary left margin that ends when a Hard
Carriage Return is encountered. To set an Indent at the cursor
position, enter a Alt-9 command. If you also want the right
margin to be indented (this ends up with a centered paragraph)
then use the Alt-0 key instead of the Alt-9. A message will
appear to acknowledge your key entry. A hidden string will be
embedded in the text to "remember" the indent. Any lines that
wrap will now automatically wrap to the new indent position. End
the indent mode by entering a carriage return. To delete an
indent mark, position the cursor on the hidden character and
delete it in a manner you would delete any character.
=====
Tabs:
The ruler line indicates where tabs exist (+). When a tab key is
pressed, spaces are used to fill up the memory. Hence, if you
want to delete the tab, you merely delete the spaces that were
entered by the tab key. If you want to do a decimal tab, that is
align the next entry per its decimal point, then instead of the
Tab key, use the Alt-J key. This will cause all numbers entered
13at the tabbed position to shift left until a decimal point or
space is entered.
=====
Large blocks of text:
To move or delete large blocks of text, use the Mark Block
feature. This enables you to move, copy, delete or alter large
blocks of data. To use this mode, position the cursor to the
starting character of your text block and press Alt-M. Next move
the cursor to the ending character of your text block. The text
will be darkened out as you move the cursor. When you get to the
ending position, enter another Alt-M. This will give you a choice
of what to do with this block. The difference between Copy and
Move is that Move removes the block from memory and places it
into the Scratchpad while Copy keeps the block in memory and
also places it in the Scratchpad memory. Delete removes the block
from memory and places the data into a special "Undo" memory.
=====
Scratchpad:
This is an extra memory that is 2000 characters long. It is used
to "cut and paste" blocks of text. Use this feature to move
paragraphs around. Text is placed into the memory using the Block
commands. To move the text from the Scratchpad memory and insert
it into the text memory, position the cursor where you want the
text to go and press Alt-S. This will present you with a menu
whereby you can select the normal Scratchpad or the Undo
Scratchpad (which contains the contents of the last Deleted
block). You can continuously retrieve this information as many
times as you wish. Hence you can use the Scratchpad to duplicate
a message many times. If you wish to examine what is in the
Scratchpad before you use it, you can do so by using the Help
menu and selecting the "View Scratchpad" category.
If you delete blocks of text greater that 2000 characters long,
the deleted block will not be saved in the UNDO memory.
=====
Bold:
To make text that you are about to enter print Bold, enter a
Alt-B key character. This will turn on the Bold feature. In
addition to the text to right of the cursor appearing brighter on
the screen, you will notice a letter B added to the top status
line in column 22. Type the text you want bold and then enter
another Alt-B to shut off the bold command. An embedded hidden
character is also entered into the text. Use Alt-V to view this
hidden character.
To make bold some text that is already typed on the video screen,
use the mark block feature (Alt-M).
14
=====
Underline:
Operates the same as the bold feature above except use the Alt-U
key.
=====
Centering Text:
Center text on a line, proceed as follows:
1. Position cursor at left margin of the line.
2. Enter one Alt-C key character. The hidden "Center On"
character occupies one space on the normal display screen. If you
use the Alt-V, you can verify that the hidden character is
present.
3. Type the text and end it with another Alt-C. This enters a
"Center Off and Carriage Return" hidden code and centers the
message. If you later change the margins you will have to
manually adjust the center command by removing or adding more
spaces in front of your centered messages. This block of spaces
was added by the Alt-C command.
=====
Superscript and subscript characters:
The Alt+ and Alt-Q keyboard commands enters a half-line-down and
half-line up command to the text. They must be used in pairs. The
video screen doesn't actually shift the text up or down but does
display an down or up triangle symbol. During print, these
triangles are not printed. Instead the proper carriage control
will occur.
=====
Clear/Erase Screen:
To clear the working memory and erase the screen in order to
begin working on a new document:
1. Go to the top of the document memory using a HOME keystroke.
2. Enter a Alt-E to erase from the cursor to the end of the
memory.
=====
Find:
To move the cursor to the next occurrence of a word or phrase,
15use the find command. To find:
1. Enter an ESC key to reset the find "value".
2. Enter F7 or Alt-F. The message "Find" will appear in the top
status line.
3. Enter the exact text you want including the proper case
4. Enter a carriage return. This tells the system to do the
Find.
5. The system will prompt you if you want to IGNORE THE CASE.
Enter Y or N.
=======
Find-Next:
If you want to do another find on the same text, enter another F7
or Alt-F. You will not be given the opportunity to enter the
value on this 2nd and subsequent Find Commands. It is assumed you
are searching for the same value. To get the system to prompt you
for a new value, enter an ESC key prior to entering the Alt-F or
F7 key. If in doubt, it is better to enter the ESC key first.
=====
Replace:
Replace one text phrase with another proceed as follows:
1. Enter F8 or Alt-R.
2. The system will prompt you for the item to REPLACE. Enter it
and end with a carriage return.
3. The system will prompt you if you want to ignore the case.
Enter Y or N.
4. The system will prompt you for the new replacement ("with")
value. The prompt at the top of the screen will display "WITH".
Enter the new value ending with a carriage return.
5. The system will prompt you if you want all occurrences to be
replaced or if you want to selectively choose as you go.
6. If you choose "Yes", the replacements will be made. If you
select "No", the system will stop on the next occurrence and ask
you if want to replace it. Enter Y to replace it or no to skip
this occurrence. The system will proceed to the next item and
repeat the sequence. If you enter ESC, it will end the search.
=====
16Headers and Footers:
A header is an optional line of text that you want to auto-
matically print at the top of the page. Headers don't show on the
video display but will print when the document is printed. When
you specify a header, you automatically decrease the amount of
lines on each page by two. One line is for the Header line and
one blank line is automatically inserted following the Header
line.
You may include a page number in the Header. To do this, enter a
Alt-5 character into the text. When this character prints, it
will substitute the page number. Do not confuse this page number
with the Automatic page number (Alt-1) feature which provides
only a page number without the Header. Do not use both of these
features at once or they will conflict.
When you want to put different Headers at the top of Odd and Even
pages, you may use alternating Headers. Header A is one Header
and Header B is another Header. You select the A or B when
entering the Header. As a rule, if you add a Header for odd
pages, you must also add a Header for the even pages. If you want
the same Header text on both Headers, use may use A or B and
specify "both" when entering the Header.
Headers on odd pages are right flush and should have the
(optional) embedded page number entered last so it ends up as the
right-most character of the Header. Headers on the even pages are
printed left flush and so should have the (optional) embedded
page numbers entered first so the page number ends up on left
side.
To enter a Header:
1. Position the cursor in the document where you want the Header
to start. This must be done at the Left Margin of a line.
2. Enter the header text you desire.
3. Move the cursor back to the start of the Header text by using
the left arrow key.
4. Enter an Alt-M command. This commences the block mode.
5. Move the block to the right until it includes the last
character of the text that you want included in the Header data.
6. Enter a second Alt-M command. This should produce a block menu
which includes the Header and Footer. Follow the instructions on
the screen. If you get a message telling you that an illegal
character is contained in the text, you have accidentally trapped
another hidden string in your block. This isn't permitted. Use
17the Alt-V to determine where the hidden code problem is. Use the
cursor position to "step around" this problem.
7. Your block of text has now been removed from the normal text
and made invisible. You can view the hidden data by entering a
Alt-V command. If you do this, enter a second Alt-V to return to
the normal screen.
8. This Header will print on the desired pages from now on or
until another Header command is entered or a "Headers Cancel"
command (Alt-3) is entered. The screen will not display the
Header but you will notice that the screen has 2 fewer lines per
page once the header is encountered.
=====
Footers:
Footers are the same as Headers except they appear at the bottom
of the page. If you have both Headers and Footers, your pages
will be reduced by 4 lines since each occupies 2 lines.
=====
Page numbers:
If you desire to have simple page numbers and do not want to use
the more complicated Headers and Footers detailed above, position
the cursor somewhere prior to the place in your text where you
want the numbering to start and use the simpler Page command
(Alt-1). This command will give you several options. Select the
number on the menu that corresponds to the physical position
where you want the page numbers to print. These numbers won't
appear on the video but will print. You may also use this command
to discontinue a previous page numbers command. If you want the
page position to continue but want the actual number to change,
enter a Alt-2 command which allows you to specify the new page
number. The page number in the top status line will be updated
when you scroll across the page number command.
If you want a more complex page number such as "Page 1" to
appear, you will have to use the Header/Footer commands instead
of the Page number commands. In the Header/Footer text, enter the
text "Page " for the text followed by a Alt-5 page trigger
character.
=====
Viewing Hidden Characters:
To view any possible hidden characters use the Alt-V command.
This will disclose any hidden character (strings) in the local
area of the cursor. This displays the selected line as displayed
on the normal screen followed by a separation bar followed by a
detailed "raw" view of the text including the hidden codes.
18
If you have no idea of where a hidden character is but want to
search for any possible occurrences, use the "Find Hidden Code"
command, Alt-8. It is also mentioned on the Help Menu under the
"Cursor" category.
=====
Default File:
The system allows you to customize your system so certain
"defaults" are in effect when you start up the system. It does
this by examining the diskette (on start-up) for a file called
"DEFAULTS.DEF". If it exists, then it is automatically retrieved
and implemented. The values are:
Left Margin, Right Margin, Top Margin ,Page Length, Pitch, Tabs,
Printer Set-up, Adjust values, and Page information.
If the default file doesn't exists, you may create one after you
have set up these values manually. Use the Alt-D command and
select "Save System Defaults". You should set up the defaults to
the most common value you will use. You must use some caution
when saving the values to save the values you desire. The biggest
precaution is to make sure the cursor is at the top (home)
position when you check the values prior to saving them. There
may be hidden codes in your text that can alter the settings as
you move the cursor. These values may not be the ones you desire.
=======
Disk File Extensions:
It is recommended that you always use the WordPerfect standard
.DOC file extension. The ASCII file option will automatically
produce a new file with the same name but with the .ASC
extension.
